AHHH!!! NO… I mean YES! I mean WTF?

Well, that was nerve racking. I have quickly learned that watching a Hokies basketball game is far more difficult to one’s stress levels than a Hokies football game… there are just too many opportunities to get upset and freak out in a basketball contest.
Truth be told, I thought we were defiantly losing the game against NC State this afternoon when the teams headed in for halftime. And by the time we were six minutes into the second half, down 17 points, all hopes of a NCAA tournament berth were gone and I concocted this on Photoshop. However, a half hour later, when the shot clock was off and “Enter Sandman” was shaking Cassell Coliseum I had done a complete 180.
My emotions echoed something that Seth Greenberg apparently said (this according to the horrific and polarizing television game announcers and further butchered by my poor memory): “Its frustrating and hard to understand how we can go from being such a good team to such a bad team, but that’s not game-to-game, that’s what happens within a single game.” Fortunately, Virginia Tech forgot how to be a “bad team” at some point in the second half and performed well in to the overtime. The Tech win snapped a 6-game losing streak against the Wolfpack and keeps Virginia Tech in the hunt, but the Hokies have to perform well and come away with wins against the lackluster opponents in our next four ACC games (GT, UVA, Maryland, FSU). I’m keeping my fingers crossed the “good team” shows up for those.

The Hokie Guru called the win at FBS and JP gives me no kudos on his blog? The Hokie Guru did the same for you when we beat Wake and expect kind treatment in return.
Yes, the guts and the glory of predicting the home win over NC State deserves recognition. Guru, you need to get a bookie for these things.
C’mon, man… this was a tough pick… considering, oh, we lost six in a row to those effs.
After all, I don’t deserve sarcasm from Dictailgate lol.
Now that’s what I’m talking about…

Give the HG some credit, DT.
Why does FSU decide to get good in basketball the same time we do. Good thing it’s not Bowden vs. Beamer.
Credit for picking us to beat NCST at home? Yeah, that’s the same as beating undefeated Wake on the road. I bet you also want credit for picking us beating Duke in football…nobody cares about your crappy blog
How about giving me some fucking credit? All I did was pull off a critical come from behind victory in OT…pricks
Jeff, I was only joking with with Jon (dictailgate) here who has been a guest blogger at my site (I have a lot of respect for him… he’s done some good work over there)… and he knows how to take jokes… you, on the other hand, do not… and you have given Jon shit in previous posts for his analysis of Bryan Stinespring’s offense.
I’m sure you’re proud of this:

Most people in Richmond apparently are proud of this… FUCK OFF, JEFF.

Wow, someone got their penis stuck in the shampoo bottle this morning…
Bahaha what the hell are you Hokies fighting over? You know your team lost to Maryland in the meantime.
Great. Now we have trolls hanging out here. Eat shit T.T. you clearly only support the Steelers because you needed to find a winning team since Maryland is total dogshit now. It took their best game of the year to beat the Hokies (and save Williams’ job). Guru, Jeff - this is why we can’t have nice things - play nice.
It took their best game of the year to hold the lead the entire game and win by 10 points…a lesser effort from UM still would have been enough to win…the Hokies need a miracle to make the tourney (win over UNC or going to the finals in the ACC tourney)
Jon, I can’t help but make fun of you and HG when all you do is lick each others assholes on your blogs…Hey, I like my salad tossed as much as the next guy, but your comments to each other feel like the lead in lines to soft-core gay porn…
Agreed
Jeff - your contribution to this blog’s comments section has never exceeded a wet fart but I know (and can understand) that you hate the cross-comments and guest blogging between myself and Guru so go ahead and make fun all you want.
More importantly however - if you are telling me that you DON’T think that was Maryland’s best game of the year against VT I would have to still disagree with you (and your alter ego). Maryland tied its best FG percentage of any ACC game this season at .481, they had their best 3-point shooting with .389, and went a fantastic 24-26 from the line (.923) while only committing a relatively low number of fouls. Though I literally believe I was on my 40th beer of the weekend so I don’t know how much was how bad VT really looked versus how good Maryland performed.
The Hokies are still on the NCAA radar too. Despite your belief we need a “miracle” I think we just need a strong finish in a very tightly-raced ACC conference this season. Jow Lunardi (who correctly predicted every single one of the 65 teams to appear in last year’s tournament) still thinks that the Hokies are on course to be in the dance. The brackets are a give-and-take mess between all the teams which are eligible and though we smack our heads at a loss like Maryland we still look more enticing of a selection than Penn State. I know you love to pick the easy way out and say we won’t make it but that doesn’t make my glass-half-full mentality completely wrong either. We were a bubble team all the way in to the final moments of last year and many people still felt we had a chance to dance where as you spent all of February and March bitching and moaning at how screwed we were. Your opinions are valid but they never change and they sound more like the kind of person who wants to watch the Orange Bowl from the bar at Bailey’s than a Hokie that wants to scream to all Hell until there is literally no chance left for a win.
Maryland may have played their best ball of the season. My argument is that we were beat so handily, UM really didn’t need that kind of effort to win the game.
My approach to Hokie sports is to have high hopes, but realistic expectations regarding post season play. We don’t get the love that other teams get in basketball or football, so we always have to expect to get slighted when human factors are involved, like BCS or NCAA tourney at large selections. Unless we’re an obvious bid, which we’re certainly not this year, I don’t expect to make the tourney (while I do hope we get in). 5 of our last 6 games are against teams who are better than us on paper, so I think we have to win 4 of those last 6 and show up at the ACC tournament to expect a spot in the tourney…our out of conference record is awful too, and they really look at that for selections.
You could claim this makes me a bad fan, but I’m the type of person to under promise and over perform. I would argue that a realistic fan is a good fan (I hate people who blindly claim they’re great in the face of obvious evidence otherwise…e.g. Notre Dame football fans)
